As an international conference venue, Fortitude Valley is a contradiction in itself – raw, yet sophisticated. The Valley, as it is affectionately known, was Australia’s first dedicated entertainment district and continues to be a hive of activity. Andy Lien, Technical Operations Manager for GreenEarth Cleaning
Manager for Camelot Cleaners in Fargo, ND. After seven years at Camelot, and overseeing a transition from perchloroethylene to GreenEarth cleaning technology, in 2013 he accepted the position of Technical Operations Manager at GreenEarth Cleaning in Kansas City, MO. Since joining the GreenEarth team, he has provided operational training and technical support services in over twenty different countries, including China, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, Switzerland, Australia, and Russia. He works closely with international testing agencies and garment technologists, which has given him the opportunity to work with the staff of companies such as SGS and Bureau Veritas. In his role at GreenEarth he is also responsible for creating and producing the training support videos and technical reference documents that Affiliates enjoy through the GreenEarth website.
Brian Tonkin’s contribution to the dry cleaning industry is extensive and multifaceted. He owned and operated a number of successful dry cleaning stores from the mid 1980s to mid 2000s including Ruggles, which he established in 1995 with business partner Peter Hudson. In 2002 he passed his Camberwell store, one of the top three busiest over the counter stores in Victoria, to his son. He holds a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, a Post Graduate Diploma in Management, is a certified Small Business Consultant and Certified Workplace Trainer and Assessor. Currently Brian serves as CEO of the Dry Cleaning Industry of Australia, of which he has been an active member since joining the industry.
Spencer Systems is Australia’s leading supplier of dry cleaning, laundry and steam solutions. Spencer Systems has a strong history of specialist servicing to dry cleaning and laundry equipment. John Hays, the principal of the business, has been operating in the industry for over 40 years. As a partner of Hays & Meyer Electrical Services he had 25 years of experience specializing in servicing dry cleaning and laundry equipment. Stephen has lived and worked in Australia for six years, in which time he has worked as a human resource generalist, employment relations adviser and a consultant.
From Scottish decent, Stephen received a Business Management Degree from the University of Glasgow and from there, moved into a graduate management position within an international Glasgow based business. Stephen also lived and worked in London prior to making the move to our Australian shores.
Prior to joining Employsure, Stephen spent two years working with the Qld and NSW Business Chambers in an adviser’s role amongst the Businesses Workplace Advice Team. It was here, dealing with front line queries, that proved to be the perfect introduction to Australian workplace relations, setting his career trajectory.
Upon joining Employsure, Stephen spent eighteen months working as a Field Consultant before stepping into his current position as Team Leader of Consultancy Services for Qld and NT.
Stephen’s core strengths and passion lies in his ability to understand and analyse client needs quickly and accurately. Currently the Head of Department and and Fashion Design Lecturer at the Australian Institute of Creative Design, as well as proprietor of Hilde Heim Designer Bridal Couture, Hilde has deep roots in the design and fashion industries. A graphic designer for Vogue in the 1990s, she now holds a Doctorate of Creative Industries, sharing her wealth of knowledge and experience with her Advanced Diploma students in Fashion Design and Fashion Business.
Her bridal couture business, Hilde Heim Designer Bridal Couture, is located on Amelia St in Fortitude Valley. Her philosophy that each gown should be as individual as the wearer sees her tailoring custom looks for her discerning brides.
With such an extensive and varied professional history in fashion, Hilde possesses a unique understanding of the trade, and from the unique perspective of each stakeholder. She is the in the unique position of working with brides and managing their expectations as well as working directly with future bridal designers and can predict future trends, while anticipating potential woes faced in aftercare.
Best mates, Nic Marchesi and Lucas Patchett (who were just nominated 2016 Young Australians of the Year) built a free mobile laundry in their old van to help the homeless. Orange Sky Laundry began in September 2014 and since then the world first idea has rapidly expanded. Orange Sky Laundry now has over 510 volunteers and are operating in 9 cities across Australia. The custom fitted vans with two commercial washing machines and two dryers, service over 62 locations and wash over 750 loads each week. A catalyst for bringing people of all walks of life together, Orange Sky facilitates countless hours of conversations each week. In February 2015, they took their mobile laundry to North Queensland to wash clothes in cyclone affected communities. Nic and Lucas have found a way to treat others the way they want to be treated by restoring respect, raising health standards and reducing the strain on resources. They now plan to expand services Australia-wide with the aim of positively connecting the community and improving the lives of others.

Deborah Rechnitz is a leading international business consultant for the dry cleaning industry with advanced degrees in Finance and Operational Management. Deborah has held positions in heavy industry as a shop foreman, financial analyst, and corporate controller as well as assignments with the U.S. Treasury Department. Deborah’s work with drycleaners has taken her to Australia, North America, Europe and Japan to share her knowledge and experience and to help her clients grow and prosper.
Deborah sold her USA consulting firm in 2007 and completed a two year assignment as Chief Operating Officer of a $30 million public dry cleaning company in the U.S. Today she remains actively involved in the industry both in the US and Australia and is proud to be one of the founders of GreenEarth Australasia.
Deborah is an internationally recognized speaker in the drycleaning industry. Engagements include the International Fabricare Institute (DLI), the International
Drycleaners Congress, the Japanese Fabricare Research Association, and the Drycleaners Institute of Australia. She is also a contributing author with the National Clothesline.
Organisational development, marketing plans, production efficiencies and acquisition strategies are all a part of the support provided by Deborah.
